PRM are technologically advanced and highly efficient direct current converters (DC/DC). They are designed for conversion of input voltage to required output voltage. Additionally, they limit maximum current, thus protecting systems from flow of excessive current which might lead to damage of sensitive elements of the system. Converters stabilize voltage, which protects other equipment from effects of sudden increase or decrease of voltage in the system – for example during start-up of the vehicle engine.
The biggest advantage of PRM converters is galvanic separation of power supply sources, that is a barrier separating input and output circuits. The application of it results in improved safety and reliability of the entire system – for instance by increasing immunity to electromagnetic interference.
They are characterized by very high tolerance of supply voltage drop and broad range of processed power values. They are distinguished by high power density in relation to low volume of the entire unit.
